Common Animals in the Tundra
Snowy Owl
The Snowy Owl can be found Alaska, Canada, Greenland, Russia, and north of the Arctic Circle. There have been reports of Snowy Owls in Ireland, Texas, China, and Georgia. They feed on small mammals such as leemings and voles. They will also feed on Rabbits and other birds and their eggs. They typically build their nests on the ground but on a high elevation to watch out for their predators and prey. Snowy Owls are the largest owls in North America. The range from 1.75 feet to 2 feet long and have a wingspan of 4.5 to 5.5 feet. They are usually white with dark spots but some Snowy Owls can be all white. They have yellow eyes and they can turn their head 270 degrees in both directions.
Mating seasons occur between April and June and somewhat through summer. They lay about 2 to 14 eggs per season. Both the male and female owls will tend to the eggs for 4 to 5 weeks, until they hatch.
